Partial & Complete Dentures

Removable Partial Dentures

A removable partial denture (RPD) is for a dental patient who is missing one or more teeth but still has other teeth present that can serve to support the partial denture. The patient may desire to have replacement teeth for functional or esthetic reasons.

The RPD may be constructed instead of bridges which may not be able to be done due to lack of required teeth to serve as support for the bridge, or for financial reasons. The reason why this type of prosthesis is referred to as a removable partial denture is because patients can remove and reinsert them when required without professional help. Conversely, a “fixed” prosthesis such as a bridge, can and should be removed only by a dental professional.

There are many different types of removable partial dentures and they take a number of dental appointments to be completed. They are not recommended for everyone, so it is necessary to speak with your dentist and discuss options as well as have him/her answer any questions.

Complete Dentures

Complete Dentures or “false teeth” are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth, and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable, however many are now being made in such a way that they are held in place by dental implants. There are two main categories of dentures, depending on whether they are used to replace missing teeth on the mandibular arch or the maxillary arch.
